Parents' Guide

 Helping your child with English
Tips to help your child enjoy English and learn more:

• Introduce English phrases into your day, e.g. say Have a nice day, Good morning, Good night, etc.
• Use the Tiger Team online materials at home with your child – here you can find songs from Tiger Team to sing at home, stories and English language games you can play together.
• Practise English with your child in an informal way, e.g. naming foods in the supermarket or singing English songs in the car.
• Set up an English corner at home with English story books, CDs of music in English and photos of cultural references from English-speaking countries.
• For celebrations like birthdays, make greeting cards in English at home with your child.
• Help your child to label objects around the house in English with Post-its®.
• Focus on what your child does well in English – praise them by saying That’s great! / Well done! when they learn a new word or song in English.
• Make a picture dictionary with your child by writing vocabulary in a notebook and drawing pictures next to each word.

Tips to help your child use the internet safely:

• Whenever possible, accompany your child when they surf the internet.
• Bookmark your child’s favourite websites so that they can find them easily.
• Establish clear rules and times for when your child can and can’t use the internet.
• Ask your internet provider to set up a parental control device and configure your browser to filter unwanted websites.
• Encourage your child to speak openly with you about using the internet and their areas of interest online.
• Make sure your child doesn’t give personal information such as name, address, etc. online; tell them to always ask you before giving their details.
• Ask your child not to share their passwords with others.
• Make sure your child’s work station is correctly set up to avoid back problems and eye-strain.

Readers

Dear parents and students,
In October the English teacher is going to start loaning out books to read at home.
Students can enjoy reading and listening books on their pace at home.
Each week students can get a book to read and keep it one or two weeks.
All the books have a CD, so use it with responsibility and return save and on time.
There are different level of books. They can choose them.
Don't worry if they can understand everything, they have to try to get the most, get used to listen and read and improve slowly.
